Machine Shop: Lesson 7 - Introduction to the Milling Machine

There are three milling machines in the UofA shop. The most common vertical milling machine found in most small shops is a Bridgeport, there are two Bridgeport machines in the UofA Student machine shop. The various parts of the machine are described and how they are used. Students practice change speeds as well as learn how to properly set up parts in a vice for machining. Students learn how to find the edge of parts, within +/- .001, using an edge finder.

Shown in the photo above are the end mills used by student for most projects. End mills are identified and a discussion of the pros and cons of each type ensue. Student will be able to identify the difference between an end mill and a drill bit or reamer. Students will have the opportunity to position stock in a vice, find the precise cente, and cut a slot the full length of the stock. Measurements are taken to see how accurately the task was performed.
