Machine Shop: Lesson 6 - Drill press operation
Mill/drill operation and miscellaneous machine shop practices are covered in this session. Prepare to get your hands dirty, the remaining classes are more hands on than previous classes. Student must come with long pants, enclosed toed shoes, eye and ear protection for the remaining classes. ![]() |
The class covers the various systems used to identify drills in the English and metric systems of measure. Other topics covered are how to use a tap drill chart. How to calculate tap holes size for non standard taps. The proper method for hand tap is demonstrated. The differences between drills, reamers counter bores, and counter sinks is discussed and illustrated.

An introduction to the student shops mill/drill machine is given. The differences are noted between a drill press and a mill/drill machine. Students learn the two belt system for changing spindle speeds and have the opportunity to change spindle speed by manipulating the belts.
At the end of the class students are hand a random selected tap. They are challenged to select the proper drill then actually drill a hole in aluminum and hand tap.
