Machine Shop: Lesson 5 -Basic power tool operation

When operating any power tool know where the off switch is before turning it on. 
  Horizontal and Vertical Band saw

Students learn safety issues unique to the horizontal and vertical saws, how to select the proper blade for material to be cut and how to change band saw blades. Students are introduced to feeds and speed and learn how to change speed via cone pulleys. Also covered, setting feed rates and safe clamping of work in the machine, how to use a file to determine relative hardness of materials prior to cutting. Each student cuts sample stock.
The differences between the horizontal and vertical saw and the abrasive saw are discussed as well as the differing safety precautions. The abrasive saw is loud and some student are intimidated by it each student has the opportunity under instructor supervision to use the saw to cut stock.

Safety issues related to the pedestal grinder. Proper method for turning on a grinder, what materials are acceptable to grind, correct adjustments of the tool rest, how to ring test a wheel prior to mounting, how to dress and true a grinding wheel.

How and when a belt sander should be used as well as, safety issues particular to the belt sander are covered. Students  learn how to choosing grit size of the belts for their sanding needs. Also covered is how to change and align the belts and adjust machine height
