ME Pre-Med Program
The Premedical option in Mechanical Engineering is designed for students who are planning to attend medical school after graduation. Completing this option will satisfy most medical schools' minimum course admission criteria. Students pursuing the premedical option must take the following courses as their 12 hours of technical-science electives:
BIOL 1543 / 1541L Principles of Biology
MBIO 2013 / 2011L General Microbiology
CHEM 3603 / 3601L Organic Chemistry
CHEM 3613 / 3611L Organic Chemistry II
However, if the student fails to complete all of the above courses, BIOL 1543/1541L will not be counted as a technical-science elective in the BSME curriculum.
In addition to the course work, most medical schools require other activities and tests such as volunteer work in a medical facility and a satisfactory score on the MCAT test. Therefore, students electing the premedical option are advised to visit the U of A pre-medical website and contact the pre-medical advisor in their freshman year.
