Job Opportunities

Mechanical Engineering is perhaps the broadest of all the engineering disciplines.  For this reason, mechanical engineers are found in virtually every industry, including manufacturing, pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, power plants, chemical, aeronautical, nautical, and automotive.  Recent graduates have taken positions with companies such as Black & Veatch, Caterpillar, Dow, Entergy, Exxon-Mobil, Falcon Jet, Georgia Pacific, Honda, John Deere, Lockheed-Martin, NASA, Rheem, Texas Instruments, Toyota, Trane, Whirlpool, and Zebco.

Most Mechanical Engineers start their careers by utilizing skills that provide an engineering service for a company.  Depending on the company, this service may include design, research, troubleshooting, analyzing, or problem solving.  Later in their careers, Mechanical Engineers are found in management positions and higher level engineering positions.  Typically, every engineer must decide whether he or she will pursue a technical or managerial career.

Upon completion of your sophomore year, you will be eligible to apply for engineering-related summer jobs or part-time jobs in many industries. You are strongly encouraged to apply for such jobs for three reasons:

  1. you will have the opportunity to observe what a wide range of companies do,
  2. you will obtain some engineering experience prior to completion of your BSME degree, and
  3. you will be well paid.

There are many opportunities available to you as a BSME engineer.  You can learn what these opportunities are by interviewing with companies. The Career Development Center can be of great assistance to you in finding suitable summer employment, part-time employment, and full employment upon graduation.  The faculty are also happy to discuss your career alternatives with you and explain the significance of working in different types of industries.
